Real-World Examples: The Power of a Lasting Partnership
Many successful artists have thrived by maintaining long-term collaborations with their producers. Adele and Paul Epworth worked together on her iconic albums 21, 25, and 30, with other collaborators joining in to explore fresh ideas. Drake and Noah "40" Shebib have been a staple team for years, with 40 contributing to nearly every one of Drake’s major projects, alongside contributions from other producers to keep things innovative. Similarly, Taylor Swift and Jack Antonoff have created some of the most successful albums of her career, including 1989 and Folklore, while also working with new collaborators for variety.
Billie Eilish and her brother, Finneas, epitomize the power of a lasting creative partnership. They created When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? and Happier Than Ever together, and their close collaboration has led to a distinct, signature sound that has resonated with millions. This model of working with a consistent team is a testament to the power of a strong, evolving partnership.
Key Terms of the Agreement
1. Exclusive Collaboration
The artist agrees to work exclusively with Joseph Brooks as their primary or executive music producer for a duration of three full albums, or an equivalent of 36 singles, or longer. During this period:
- The artist may collaborate with other producers but must include Joseph Brooks as a co-producer or executive creative director.
- The artist is prohibited from working with other music producers unless they are collaborating alongside Joseph Brooks as a co-producer.
- Joseph Brooks will oversee production quality and contribute creative input to ensure the consistency and development of the artist's signature sound.
2. Reduced Rates for Commitment
Joseph Brooks’s usual rate for uncommitted artists is $2,500 per single. For artists under this agreement:
- The rate is reduced to $2,000 per single for production, mixing, and mastering.
- Longer-term commitments allow the artist to benefit from priority scheduling and cost savings.
3. Collaboration with Additional Producers
When additional producers are involved:
- Joseph Brooks’s rate is reduced by 40% (e.g., $1,200 per single in co-production scenarios).
- He remains actively involved as a co-producer or executive creative director to oversee quality and ensure cohesion.
4. Publishing and Royalties
The producer’s share of publishing and royalties will be negotiated and outlined for each project. This ensures fairness and clarity regarding the financial benefits of successful songs.
5. Binding Commitment
Once signed, the agreement requires the artist to complete the equivalent of three albums with Joseph Brooks. This commitment ensures continuity and creative development before any changes to the collaboration.
Example Scenario
Standard Production Rate
- Uncommitted Artist: $2,500 per single
- Committed Artist: $2,000 per single
Co-Production Scenario
If the artist brings in another producer for a song:
- Joseph Brooks’s rate reduces to 40% less, or $1,200 per single.
- He retains co-producer credits and provides input to ensure the sound aligns with the artist’s vision.
Why This Agreement Works
By combining financial incentives, creative consistency, and quality assurance, this arrangement supports the artist’s growth while recognizing the producer’s vital contributions. Joseph Brooks’s commitment to his clients ensures that both parties benefit from a mutually rewarding partnership.

The Benefits of Building a Lasting Relationship with a Music Producer
As an artist, finding the right producer is one of the most crucial decisions you’ll make in your career. But once you've found that perfect collaborator, why not keep the partnership going? Building a lasting relationship with a producer not only strengthens your creative output but also helps you develop a cohesive sound, create high-quality music efficiently, and establish a consistent team that grows with you. Here’s why sticking with the right producer can benefit both you and your music.
The Artist’s Perspective: Consistency and Growth
One of the biggest advantages of working exclusively with a producer is the ability to develop a signature sound. When you keep working with the same producer, they get to know your style, your preferences, and your vision, which allows them to anticipate your needs. Over time, this leads to a deeper creative understanding and a more refined, consistent output. As you grow as an artist, your producer will grow with you, adapting to your evolving sound while keeping everything cohesive.
Having the same producer on your team also means you can bypass the endless trial and error of working with new people each time. Finding the right producer is like finding a creative soulmate, and once you've found them, it’s best to keep that relationship alive. This is especially beneficial for building a cohesive project. With your primary producer always on hand, you can create albums that flow seamlessly, keeping your sound consistent across your work.
Additionally, locking in pricing with your producer means that you no longer have to negotiate rates or get new quotes every time you start a new project. Having a set deal allows you to plan your budget more effectively and focus on the creative side of things without worrying about the financial side each time you want to make music.
The Producer’s Perspective: Stability and Creativity
For producers, long-term collaborations offer stability in an industry that can often be unpredictable. With repeat clients, you no longer have to constantly search for new work or hustle to fill your calendar. This kind of consistent workflow allows producers to focus on quality over quantity, which ultimately leads to better results. Familiarity with the artist’s vision and sound streamlines the production process, making it faster and more efficient while still leaving room for experimentation and growth.
Working with the same artist over time also allows producers to deepen their understanding of their collaborator’s evolving style. They’re able to bring fresh, innovative ideas to the table while maintaining continuity with the artist’s overall sound. This creative growth benefits both the artist and the producer, as they can work together to push boundaries and explore new musical directions.
Fostering a Real Team Dynamic
A lasting producer-artist relationship isn’t just about making music—it’s about building a team. Collaboration creates a dynamic where both parties work together towards a common goal. The relationship between the artist and the producer grows over time, resulting in a strong creative partnership based on mutual trust, respect, and understanding. This kind of team-oriented environment fosters creativity and ensures that both the artist and producer can evolve together.
As the relationship develops, you can bring in additional collaborators or co-producers to add new elements to your music, but it’s important to always keep your primary producer in the mix. They can co-produce with new talent, maintaining the integrity of your sound while allowing for experimentation. This ensures that your core sound stays consistent, even as you grow and try new things.
Collaborating Without Replacing
When you find the right producer, they become an integral part of your creative process. But that doesn’t mean you have to keep them to yourself forever. If you feel the need to bring in new producers, don’t view it as a replacement. Instead, consider bringing new collaborators in to co-produce alongside your primary producer. This allows you to explore new sounds and ideas without disrupting the consistent relationship you’ve built with your main producer. It’s a model that balances innovation with continuity, ensuring that your music grows and evolves while staying true to your core sound.
Final Thoughts: Grow Together
As you progress in your music career, it’s important to find producers who not only support your vision but who also grow with you. Building long-term, exclusive relationships with the right producers is beneficial for both you and them. It fosters creativity, consistency, and trust, allowing both artist and producer to thrive together. With a strong, steady team by your side, you’ll have the support you need to build a cohesive body of work that truly reflects who you are as an artist. Keep your team intact, bring in new collaborators when necessary, and enjoy the process of growing together as a team. The results will speak for themselves.
